UK Government Mandates Open Standards for BIM Data on Public Projects

/

The Cabinet Office has issued updated procurement guidance requiring all centrally funded construction projects above £2 million to deliver asset data using open IFC and COBie standards, moving away from vendor-locked BIM formats. The policy, effective from April 2025, aligns with the Government's Construction Playbook and has been welcomed by the buildingSMART UK & Ireland chapter. FreeCAD and BlenderBIM contributors have highlighted the move as a boost for open source BIM tooling adoption.
