PostGIS Adopted as Standard Spatial Database Across Scottish Government Estate

/

The Scottish Government's digital directorate has standardised on PostGIS as the preferred spatial database engine across its central technology estate, replacing a mixed environment of Oracle Spatial and ESRI geodatabase instances. The decision follows a two-year technical review led by the Scottish Government's Chief Digital Officer. Transport Scotland and NatureScot are the first agencies scheduled to migrate, with rollout expected to complete by spring 2026.
