US survey and construction technology firm Trimble has taken a minority stake in the IfcOpenShell Foundation, the organisation behind the widely used open source IFC geometry library. The investment is intended to accelerate development of IFC 4.3 support and improve interoperability between IfcOpenShell and Trimble's Tekla Structures platform. Industry observers have welcomed the funding but raised questions about the long-term governance implications for the open source project.
