A survey by the Association for Geographic Information has found that PostGIS, the open source spatial extension for PostgreSQL, is now the most commonly used database backend among UK utility and highways asset management teams, overtaking Oracle Spatial for the first time. Respondents cited lower total cost of ownership and improved integration with Python-based analysis pipelines as key factors. Highways England and Northumbrian Water were named among early large-scale adopters.
