The joint delivery team behind the UK Government's National Underground Asset Register has confirmed that its core spatial data infrastructure is built on PostgreSQL with the PostGIS extension, handling millions of utility asset records submitted by network operators. The choice reflects a deliberate open source strategy to avoid proprietary database lock-in. Geospatial consultancy Astun Technology is providing technical support for the deployment.
