PostgreSQL 17 Adoption Accelerates Across UK Infrastructure Asset Databases

/

Highways England contractor Amey has standardised its road asset management database on PostgreSQL 17 with the PostGIS extension, replacing an Oracle Spatial deployment that had been in use since 2011. The move forms part of a broader open source data infrastructure strategy encouraged by Cabinet Office procurement guidance favouring open standards in critical national infrastructure contracts. Amey's data engineering team has contributed several PostGIS performance patches upstream, with two accepted into the 3.5 release cycle.
