The Welsh Government has confirmed that OpenStreetMap will serve as the base cartography layer for its new Planning Portal Cymru, built on open source stack including GeoServer and PostGIS. The portal, developed by Informed Solutions under contract to the Welsh Revenue Authority and Planning Inspectorate Wales, is expected to go live in Q1 2025. Officials say using OSM avoids recurring Ordnance Survey licensing costs while enabling community-driven data updates.
