Highways England Trials OpenDRIVE and SUMO for Road Network Simulation

/

National Highways is conducting a live pilot using the open source SUMO traffic simulation engine alongside OpenDRIVE road network format to model junction behaviours on the A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon corridor. The trial, run in partnership with the Transport Systems Catapult, aims to reduce reliance on proprietary VISSIM licences. Results are expected to inform a broader open tooling strategy for digital twin infrastructure projects by late 2025.
