Arup's digital cities team has published internal benchmarking results showing PostgreSQL 17 with the PostGIS extension outperforming proprietary alternatives for large-scale urban sensor data ingestion in smart city pilot projects in Bristol and Newcastle. The report recommends PostgreSQL as the default database tier for new urban data platform deployments, citing superior geospatial query performance and zero licensing costs at scale. The findings have been submitted to the BSI smart cities working group.
