The Planning Inspectorate has completed migration of its national appeals casework system to a PostGIS spatial database backend, replacing an ageing Oracle Spatial installation. The project, delivered in partnership with Deloitte and the open source consultancy Astun Technology, reduces annual database licensing expenditure by an estimated £220,000. PostGIS will handle spatial queries underpinning the Inspectorate's public-facing appeals map, which receives over two million visits annually.
