The Planning Inspectorate has launched a public consultation mapping tool built on OpenStreetMap and the open source Maplibre GL JS library, designed to help communities visualise proposed changes under the revised National Planning Policy Framework. Developed in partnership with the geospatial team at MHCLG, the tool replaces a proprietary mapping service and reduces per-user licensing costs significantly. Early feedback from local planning authorities has been broadly positive, with several requesting access to the underlying codebase via GitHub.
