OpenStreetMap UK has announced a structured community mapping campaign targeting urban tree canopy coverage across ten English towns and cities, in collaboration with the Woodland Trust and several university geography departments. The dataset will be made available under the ODbL licence and is intended to support biodiversity net gain calculations required under the Environment Act 2021. Initial data collection using StreetComplete and JOSM editors is already underway in Manchester and Sheffield.
