The Office for National Statistics has published a new open source R package on GitHub, designed to help local planning authorities calculate standardised housing need figures in line with the revised National Planning Policy Framework. The package, named 'housingneeds', includes reproducible scripts drawing on Census 2021 data and ONS population projections. Several planning consultancies, including Lichfields and Iceni Projects, have already flagged interest in adopting the toolkit.
