Architecture and engineering consultancy Jacobs, working with Ordnance Survey and the Scottish Future Trust, has confirmed that its Edinburgh urban digital twin pilot is built entirely on a PostgreSQL and PostGIS data backend, with a FreeCAD-based geometry pipeline feeding 3D city models. The project, part of the wider Smarter Towns initiative, eschewed proprietary platforms such as Bentley iTwin in favour of open standards and reusable components. Full technical documentation is due to be published under an open licence later this quarter.
