The OpenBIM Alliance has announced an extension to the open IFC schema to support embodied carbon and whole-life carbon data fields, aligning with the UK Government's forthcoming Net Zero Buildings Standard. BuildingSMART International confirmed that the updated IFC 4.4 draft will be compatible with existing open source tools including IfcOpenShell and BlenderBIM, enabling architects and contractors to embed carbon metrics directly within building models without proprietary software.
